Grant FAQ

1. What if I am not a 501(c)(3) yet, but have applied?

You may apply under an "umbrella" organization that has 501(c)(3) status of similar nature.

2. What if I am not going to have 501(c)(3) status, because it is a one time program/event?
Again, you may apply under an "umbrella" organization that has 501(c)(3) status of similar nature.
3. I do not have or have not ever done a budget. Is there a form that has to be filled out?
No, you can submit a budget on spread sheet, or any other format as long as it is legible.
4. Is there a minimum/maximum amount of grant money that I can apply for?
No. You may apply for any amount and for whole/partial funding for our project.
5. I have never filled out a grant application before. Can you help?
Please contact our grant writing specialists, or call a board member for assistance. Forms are available online from our website.

6. What if I miss the published deadline for submission of grant application?
Your application must be postmarked by the deadline date. It may be hand delivered, emailed, or faxed by due date as well.

7. Do I have to use your forms/format?
No, but it is helpful in our review process to have you use our forms.

8. Do I need to fill out everything on the grant application/cover sheet?
Yes, an incomplete application may not be eligible or processed in the current funding cycle. Please contact your San Juan Island Community Foundation representative for assistance.

9. Can I apply for more than one project/item/event within one grant application?
Yes, but those requests should be consistent with the general intent of the grant request. For example, an organization could apply for money for office equipment, training seminars, and capital improvements if they are all related to the same project. However, if your organization is requesting money for unrelated projects (to one another), than you should probably submit separate grant applications. Keep in mind the San Juan Island Community Foundation does not fund on-going administrative expenses, such as salaries, dues, general office expenses, general travel expenses, etc. Please refer to our mission statement for clarification, or call a board member for assistance.
