What do you feel that the nonprofit community as a whole could be doing
better on San Juan Island to raise awareness of the needs of the SJI
community and philanthropic opportunities that exist here? A quote from
our interview with Joyce Sobel of the Family Resource Center:
- "Nonprofit
organizations are proliferating in the county and on San Juan Island.
The nonprofits on San Juan Island are competing for the "same" dollars
from the "same" people; and, therefore, they need to communicate better
to these "same" people about what each of them does in order that
donors are able to decide where to contribute and how to contribute."
- "There
is an increasing need for these nonprofits to be more specific in
explaining what they do. Have you noticed how many of us are promoting
"a healthy community"? And then when you read the details, the "healthy
community" becomes kind of a blur. WHAT does a "healthy community" mean
in terms of the missions and visions and goals of each of these
nonprofit organizations? This "language" needs to be explored, defined;
and the issue needs to be discussed among the nonprofits." The SJICF
